88' volvo 240 dl-5 speed-214,000 miles.How do you adjust the timing? 200 1988

1988 volvo 240 dl-5 speed-214,000 miles.
The car idles very weird, and once in a while it will stall if I am sitting at a light or stop sign. I was told I should adjust my timing, but I can't remember how. I remember on a few older cars I used a screwdriver! How do I check the rpm's to make sure they are right?
