When to change the water pump? 200 1981

I've got an 81 242 manual tran.

This is a spin off the thread below re: timing belt. (http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=779833)

There is mention of changing the water pump as part of preventative maintance, and I'm wondering what factors to consider when doing it. I'll be using a mechanic for the timing belt change, so I'm wondering if the pump is something I should just pay for while they're in there.

If/when it is time to do it, is there proper etiquette for bringing your own parts to an independant mechanic? Is it rude to just show up with the pump, or should I get a price quote from the mechanic first? IPD's pumps are on sale right now.

as always, thanks in advance for your advise
