Auto tran slipping on 89 245 200

This started happening after I got to DC after a nice through drive from Missouri. When I put the car in gear and give it gas, the engine revs and the car won't go - like the tranny is slipping. If I put it in first and start up very slowly then it works OK. It will not go from start if in 2 or D, just "slip". Visiting DC is no fun without a mechanic to go to. I am afraid to go through hilly country on my way back home if it starts to slip in OD.
