Unless it is an old 3 speed it's easy to tell the M41 and M40 apart.

The M40 is the 4 speed tranny, single metal case, very roughly 1 foor long (not including input shaft).

The M41 is an M40 (with a couple of changes) with an overdrive unit bolted onto the rear. Very roughly 2 feet long, 2 units bolted together.
