964 Head rebuilt, installed and engine will not start. 900 1995

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to help out my Volvo mechanic. A few weeks ago he had a customer's '95 964 towed into the shop. The car has ~172K km (~108k mi) on it. He discovered that the t-belt tensioner had let go and therefore the belt let go and the pistons mashed the valves :( He removed the head and discovered that only the valves had been damaged. He ordered the needed parts, rebuilt the head and reinstalled it. Once it was reassembled the engine would not start. He was met with the sound of collapsed lifters and could not revive the engine even after hours of trying. He checked the compression and there was none on the cylinder he checked. This indicated to him that the lifters were colapsed so he proceeded to remove the head. Oil pressure seemed normal. Once the head was removed he checked the lifters and found that some were springy and some where hard as a rock. He decided that there must be something wrong with the new lifters and ordered a another set from a different source. He will be installing the new lifters next week and then reinstalling the head. Any suggestions? Any similar experiences? Seems like an odd problem to me, but I'm not overly familiar with the B6304. My mechanic said that this is the 1st time that he can remember ever having to rebuild or even remove a B6304 head. Hopefully he'll get it up and running again next week! Thanks for any responses and/or help!
