Hello everyone.
I'm looking for some clarification on replacing a couple of stripped studs on the back wheel of my '77 245. I've been driving it around with only 3 nuts done up since I stripped them changing a wheel last week. It's held ok for gentle driving around town, but it has to do 500 kms of highway driving on Thursday so it's time to get the wheel attached properly.
I had a look through the archives and got some idea of how to put them in, so I jacked up my car, removed the wheel, hung the brake caliper out of the way, undid the little 10mm guide bolt holding the disc in place and attempted to remove the brake disc.
It didn't want to come off, stands to reason I suppose. It's probably the original disc, in which case it's been happily held in place by the wheel stud's torque for 27 years and is in no hurry to be seperated.
I gave it a push and pull, but without jackstands here at college, I don't want to pull the car too hard towards me. Is there some trick to getting the things off? The haynes simply says "remove the disk", which is less than helpful.
Also, how much room am I going to have to maneauver the new stud into place? Am I going to remove the disc to reveal a handbrake drum in the way? Please tell me I don't have to remove the axle because I have no jackstands and no money to pay professionals.
