Hi,
I'm looking at possibly buying a '92 740 red turbo wagon. Maybe then swapping the engine into my daily driver '93 940 N/A :)
The guy is offering it for $3900. That sounds wayy too steep for me.
Car has 130k miles on it, turbo has about 75k miles on it. No rust on the body, some superficial rust on underbody parts (e.g. tranny cross member). That's pretty normal I assume.
The air hoses going to the turbo have a ton of oil on them on the outside (turbo seals up for renewal??). Could that mean the turbo's days are counted? The accelerator seems hard to depress, way tougher than on my '93 940 N/A. Could be the cable, or worse - the transmission kickdown thing (either cable or valving getting stuck). I don't know but sure it's another point in my favor :)
The suspension etc. is original, no bushings were replaced. Motor mounts are original and thus shot as well. Tranny mount seems to be in same shape.
Oil seals on the engine must be original or very old as they leak in unison and as expected :)
The car looks like maintained to run "well enough" and boy it *does* pick up very nicely. So I don't see problems there as far as engine's "heart" is concerned. A volvo shop did regular oil changes and the guy used synthetic blend one time, then dino, then synthetic blend and so on (every type of oil the other time :).
The driver side's power window is stuck. There are no power seats in it.
A/C works fine (cold air in about 8 seconds on full blower).
Exhaust is all original (maybe mufflers are newer, but cat is original and thus dead as well but it doesn't seem clogged). O2 sensor seems to be original as well. Thus cat & O2 have to be replaced right away. Point for me I guess :)
Radiator & hoses are original, the coolant was leaking on the water pump hose connections (old hoses = bad hoses :)
I'm thinking about offering about $2000. Is this a fair offer? Would you try to bargain less? Any other points I should raise on such a car? I think it's only value (apart from the turbo engine and the rust-less body) is a working AC system. Everything else that nominally has to be replaced at that age has to be replaced it seems... (bushings, shocks/struts, oil seals everywhere, ...)
I'm up for all comments.
Cheers, Kuba
