M47 tranny grinding rocks when in gear and at startup 200 1987

bricksters:

this just started happening two days ago:

upon starting my brick, it feels as though in the tranny the teeth of some gears are a bit off and there is a bit of grinding upon startup but it always fires up. When I put the car in gear (drive/reverse/etc) initial acceleration feels and sounds like rocks grinding (sort of like driving over a dirt road with rocks). In neutral, it idles and revs just fine - any idea where I should start looking? Other than that, everything else is good........
