It has me puzzled, any ideas? 700 1990

Sounds like you already tested many of the usual suspects. Two possible intermittent spark problems are the RPM sensor, and the ignition power stage. Saw the following in a recent diagnostic thread, for discerning between the two (re/ 940T, posted by Porkface):

when the car does not start, can you hear the injectors clicking? if so, the the ignition power stage is likely the no spark problem. if the injectors and the spark is dead, then it's probably the speed sensor. (link to original thread)

When my RPM sensor went, it set a tell-tale code in OBD. Hope you get it worked out soon...
