'93 Volvo 240 Check Engine Light - Serious Problem!!! 200 1993

Just today after i pumped a couple bucks worth of gas to get home, i noticed that the check engine light came on. This kinda worried me, but somehow, i didnt think much of it becasue the car ran fine. I came home and called my volvo mechanic and told him about the problem. He said it may be some electricial error that occurs (lurking this forum noted me of this problem) , therefore i made an appointment to see him and never really thought about it. Well, later tonight as i tried to fill my tank, the pump kept stopping and i couldnt really fill my tank. It went all the way up to around 9 bucks. I stopped and didnt really wanna force the gas in but had the dumb sense to go to another gas station and try to fill the tank there (my logic for this was that the pump i always go to had bad nozzles that would always click in) Anyways, at the other station, i tried to pump gas and was stopped at about a $1.38. Anybody know what is wrong with my car. My appointment is at thursday, therefore im gonna have to drive for an extra day before i really get a prognosis and repairs. Please help!!!!
