83 245 Overdrive Problems 200 1983

Hello,

I have a question about a problematic overdrive unit on my 83 245DL. Starting about a year ago, the overdrive started to act up. At first, it would not always engage when I pushed the button. Sometimes I would have to try 3 or times before it would work. Then other times it would work just fine. But recently I noticed something else. Now, when the button is pushed, the engine speed drops, like it should, but when I push the accelerator down, the engine speed runs back up to about where it was in 4th. If I let off he accelerator, the engine speed drops down 800-900 rpm.

I would imagine that this is some internal problem and the unit needs to be rebuilt. How hard is this to do? I need to replace my transmission mount and the driveshaft bearing soon anyway. Have any of you tackled this project before and if so, are there any special tools I would need?

I have replaced the relay and checked the solonoid for "click" and it still does.

Thanks in advance.
