take it or leave it ? 1800 1972

I have seen this 1972 1800es sitting on a city street for a while. Never moves. Other day, I stop, look at it, and knock on a couple of doors. Found the owner, who is interested in selling, motivated by wife & no place to properly store it.

Now I have always admired the 1800 look, but know next to nothing about them, though I have learned the drivetrain is shared with other Volvos of the era, so those kinds of parts should be no trouble.

But the thing has sat for two or three years, he says occaisonally driven around the block, but I doubt that. So I'm expecting an engine rebuild. Side wagon window is out and laying in the back, plastic sheet duct taped over opening but torn. Who knows how long it's been raining in the back (it's not the Pacific Northwest, but neither is it Arizona). It has evidence of a repaint that is peeling in small places, with a little rust bubbling up under the paint at the bottom of the windshield on the driver side. It supposedly was "restored" 5 or 6 years ago. It looks good considering the missing window, and the clutter inside of it. Doesn't look like any restoration was done on the drivetrain, I suspect it was a cosmetic only restoration. It has NY plates on it, so it lived for a time in the north, don't know how much road salt it had seen.

I haven't given it a close inspection yet, but would like advice on whether it is one to avoid. Or what to inspect closely. Or if it is worth restoring at the right price (and what price that might be) ? I have a garage with room for wife's car and this project car, and a daily driver that would allow me to take my time restoring the car.
