My 1991 745T is using about 1 quart of oil every 1000 to 1400 miles, which is a bit more than the average that I have found on the FAQ on this site. Had the front of the car up on stands today and got my first good look at the engine, etc. from below. Noticed a few areas of oil leakage that concerned me. Would love it if you guys with more Volvo 700/900 experience could let me know if I'm making the right assesments about what to do, and in one case (by the oil filter) provide some guidance on what to do:
There are small, barely visable, thankfully, trails of oil coming from the bottom of the timing belt cover and somewhere around the engine/transmission joint, or slightly behind that. Guess I'd better get off my !@@ and clean out the breather box, flame trap housing and all the hoses. And hope the seals are not shot, but just leaking a bit because of high crankcase pressure. It needs a timing belt so it won't be so very bad if it needs seals too, while I'm in there doing the belt.
The oil filter looks like it is screwed on to a long adapter that attaches to the engine on the passenger side, toward the front of the engine. It seems to be bolted to the engine with a bolt with a very big head. There is oil crud all over the part of the adapter around and to the rear of the big bolt head. Further, toward the back of the adapter, near the filter there are two steel pipes that come off of the adapter, run forward and eventually connect to the oil cooler. At the filter end, the outer pipe and its fittings where it attaches to the filter or filter adapter is covered in fresh oil. I checked the fittings and they seem pretty darn tight. But the part of the adapter they attach to looks like it might be a separate piece that fits between the oil filter and the long adapter with the big bolt, and it might be leaking at that junction. Is this a common leak, what parts do I need to fix it, and how do I fix it?
There is a leak in the vicinity of some sensor that is under the intake manifold, passenger side (obviously) near the center of the engine. It is just to the front of, and above the knock sensor. It screws in to the engine and may be the oil pressure sensor, if it has one. The oil may be coming from the area of the #2 intake runner/head junction, but I can't figure why that would leak oil. Or maybe there is something else in that area. Any ideas?
The previous owner ran this car on dino oil. But, if I can get the leaks fixed and get it up to at least 2000 miles per quart, I want to change it over to synthetic, preferably Redline. So fixing the leaks is important.
Thanks
