200 Radio Problem, plea for advice, can't take conservative talk radio much longer

I am enjoying driving my "new" 1992, and would enjoy it even more with a choice of radio stations! The AM band comes in fairly clearly well, but it pretty much limits me to a Hispanic Radio Station (OK when they are playing music but there is a lot of talk and ad spots much of the time) or a very conservative talk radio (Rush, Sean Hannity, etc.) which I can only take in very small doses. When I try either of the FM bands every few seconds the radio gives out loud blaring noises, when this happens the ST (stereo) readout flashes on very briefly, it does not show otherwise. Is this a radio problem, or something else in the car that might be causing this? The radio is the standard radio/tape deck that came with the car.

1980 wagon, original Volvo radio, it plays but the audio quality is not good
