Rough Idle and Run...Hard Start...Backfiring... 200 1986

1986 240DL w/ aprox. 200K. This morning out of the clear blue the Volvo was almost impossible to start. It turned over and over until it finally caught and ran VERY roughly. Then it cut off. Same scenario about 4-5 times. I finally got it running for good and it was super rough and a belt was howling like mad. There was a lot of hesitation on low idle, high idle, easy acceleration while driving and hard acceleration. Also, there was some very quiet, low sounding backfiring?? Almost like a soft little “putt putt” noise. This noise was while I was trying to start the car. I’m not sure what of this is important so I included everything I could think of.

Nothing like this has ever happened before. This is the car everyone looks to when all else fails. Anyone know what might be going on?
