prepump filter, carburated, 140-160

Do you really need a filter? In my carburetor Odyssey I just removed the filter which had been put on last summer when hooking up the old mechanical fuel pump and disconnecting the new electric one. Then in conversation with a mechanic at the volvo speciality repair shop the guy said that the 140s didn't have a filter to begin with. So unless the tank has a lot of gunk in it (?), is it necessary? So I have left it off.
