Do it yourself ? 200 1988

I have been bringing my volvo to a great volvo mechanic in my area for years. I would appreciate doing some work on my own, though, to save some cash. I did some work on my old Jeep Cherokee, but it was fairly easy to get underneath. I'd appreciate a quick list of things I should buy.

Also, has anyone used POR-15 to stop their rust? How has it worked? I have a tiny bit of rust and I just want to contain it.

Thanks
