BRAKE PAD SHIMS QUESTION 200 1986

I ordered some PBR deluxe pads from IPD on Tuesday and expect them tomorrow. I forgot to order the shims. When I called the next day to order them, the salesman said that so long as I put the Sli-Glyde lube to the back of the pads, I shouldn't need the shims. My last set of brake pads were from Midas and I don't think they would have had the shims available in their stock. Will I be OK without the shims or should I wait and order some????
