Brake pad wear questions 200 1982

In 2001 I replaced both F&R brake pads on my car at 135K miles. Inspecting Pads I find that I will need REAR pads in a few months (measured at 5mm each & Clymer manual says limit is no less than 3mm ) & the FRONTS are still good till next year. I thought that the FRONTS would wear quicker. I have had this before but there has been NO Problem braking as far as I can see.
