waste gate rod link length base -line 700 1989

I have recently installed a dawes device on the 89' turbo,I have been doing some tuning,at first; because the reduced length of the waste-gate rod the dawes device had to be backed off to the point that I could just blow thru it,so I kept extending the rod length so I could put around 5 lbs of pressure on the dawes unit to achieve around 9-10lbs of boost. This has a effect on the turbo at lower rpm levels of boost for better torque output.I still have preload on the actuator spring when I install the rod onto the waste gate door link, but can I extend the rod so it will just slip onto the waste-gate door link so the device is doing most of the work and actuator will open the waste gate quicker when pressure by passes the dawes device?
