Mercedes SL good car to own or good car to run from?

My mom want's a sports car of some type. She said that she liked the Mercedes SL that were made between 1972-1989, I belive that they were refered to as the 107 body type. They look they have aged well, for the most part, however, I would be concearned that they would cost a fortune to keep going. Does anyone know how these cars compare to our bricks as far as doing work your self, avalibilty/ cost of parts, and just general reliability. I know that they made several moded, in this same body style like 300sl 450 sl and 560sl etc, which one woul be a good one? What years are good. What else should be known about these cars?

Thanks for the non-volvo advice. :) Happy bricking.
