draining battery 200 1987

The battery in my 87 245DL keeps going dead. I have just replaced the alternator (the one in there was in bad shape) but the battery is still being drained somehow. I've spent some time cleaning the posts and such to make sure the wires/posts were making contact.

After testing the circuits, I have isolated that headlight circuit as the faulty one. However, I have no way of knowing what in the circuit is drawing so much amperage. The car will run fine until that circuit is opened, then my fuel/temp gauges die, any other circuits run at partial power, and the headlights shine very dimly.

Has anyone else had this problem? Or does anyone have a suggestion as to what might be causing this problem? If I can't get any ideas here, I'll have to go to a mechanic and see if he can figure it out.

Thanks for all your help over the past couple of weeks!
