Turbo out of gas 700 1989

Hi guys, I would very much appreciate your help and advice in the following question.
VOLVO 740 Turbo Intercooler, 1989

The gauge of my fuel level indicator stopped working a couple of days ago. Today when I was driving around with still some gas in the tank, I thought, the engine stopped suddenly. I normally need to refill the tank after 250 miles, the mileage at that point was 215, so I thought it may well be that I just run out of gas, I put a gallon in the tank but the problem persisted and the engine did not want to start again. Is there any known problem associated with Turbo engines if you run out of gas? How can I solve it?

Thanks for your help,
