fuel and fuel sensor replacement 200 1983

The amount of fuel you've got in the tank doesn't make a darn bit of difference, aside from it being a little messy if the tank is totally full. Certainly from the standpoint of safety it makes no difference, since it's vaporized gasoline that burns, not liquid. But no matter how much fuel is in the tank, you'll want to plug up the hole with a big rag after you take the unit out so dirt doesn't fall in.

Before you start you should relieve the pressure in the fuel lines to reduce the amount of gas that get sprayed all over the place when you take the fuel lines off. To do this, just remove one of the electrical connections off of the main fuel pump, start the car and run it for a few seconds until it dies. Disconnect the battery and you're ready to roll. Don't pound on the retainer ring with a steel punch, which can throw off a spark and them boom! Use a brass punch or the special tool (IPD has it for $25). In a pinch, I used to wrap a rag around a big screwdriver and used that to pry the ring around.

It takes some finagling to get the unit out. Just twist it around, lean it this way and that, and eventually you'll get it out. Try to remember what you did to get it out, because you'll want to do the reverse of that to get it back in. Be careful of the wiring to the intank pump. That can be fragile. If your kit has the new connectors, take the opportunity to change them and solder them really good so you won't have to worry about breaking them off when you stuff the unit back into the tank. And don't get lazy about the little rubber hose. Replace it in any case if your kit has one to spare. You might have to cut it to length. If your kit doesn't have one and you don't have a short length of the right width handy, inspect the one on the car really, really well because any cracks in this little part can be the source of serious fuel deliver problems that will be hard to track down.

You'll want to buy a new rubber gasket for the retainer ring.
