1990 740 Running very rough 700 1990

I have a 1990 740 with a B230 that is running very rough. I noticed for about
a Month a fuel smell coming from the exaust. Now is runs very rough and
dies once I put it into gear. When I first crank the car it idles very rough
for about 20 seconds then smooths out. I can rev the engine and it sounds fine
but once I put it in gear it sputters and dies. I suspect may a fuel pressure
regulator but I'm not sure. Any ideas?
