If he is indeed running two pairs of 4-ohm speaker in parallel, he now has a 2-ohm load on the two rear channels. I forsee a cooked PA in his future if he takes his volume control over 50% for an extended period of time.
Personally, I'm exploring the options of putting a 6-CD changer in my 780s. Starting in 1991, Volvo began using the CR-813 and CR-814 tape decks in their vehicles. These have CD changer control capailities and will control any CD changer that can function on the Alpine M-bus system. (FYI, Volvo radios and amps are of exceptional quality since they were built under contract by Alpine.) If you want to add a second set of rear speakers to the Volvo system, just get (or make) a Y-adapter (DIN-to-DIN), and send the rear signal output to two seperate rear amplifiers (or a 4-channel amp to power all four rear speakers if you can find one).
Please do not throw Volvo amps in the trash. At least sell them on eBay or offer them here to Brickboard members. The smooth-cliping electronics and amplifier circuits in them were built by Alpine before they signed the huge production contracts for Circuit City and Best Buy (about 1994-1995). Therefore, with lower volumes, higher quality parts were used and quality control was exceptional. You will be hard pressed to find better built car audio amplifiers than those built for Volvo. I would rather have a used Volvo amp in my car than one of equal power built today. If you're preparing to dump a Volvo amp in the trash, give me a call and I'll pay for shipping.
One last note, the CR-814 and CR-813 Volvo head units do not have the provision for seeking FF and RW with a CD track. It only allows you to change from track to track, and CD to CD.
