Accelerator cable removal question 200 1980

Trying to disconnect the accelerator cable from the round throttle "barrel" on the intake manifold (B21F engine). Looks like the cable has a ball on the end that fits into a hole and that this -should- just slide out (kind of like disconnecting bicycle brake cables). It's stuck in there - is there something else I need to do to get it out or is it in fact supposed to just slide out? Thanks
