A/C Compressor died 200

I have a 89 240 DL. When my parents where bringing it home the day they bought it the ac died and smoke started coming from the hood. I dunno what they did after that, except take it to get the belt changed so the power steering would work again. I wasnt in the car so i dont know what exactly happened or what the mechanic did to the compressor..but the entire clutch is gone. If I just go out to the junkyard and buy a stock diesel kiki compressor like the one i had, what other steps must i go through before it'll function? i dont wanna pay the 600 some dollars offered for the repair by a mechanic? thanks.
