Auto transmission doesn't shift gear 900 1994

Good day,

My 940GL has done more 333k kilometers (over 208k miles). The car's auto transmission doesn't shift gear when starting from cold until warm up. By warm up, I mean 15 minutes of stationary warming up or up to 2 miles travelling. The car will be stuck in low gear.

I have to move on the side of the road and let other cars pass. Once the gear shifts, its okay for the rest of the journey. If the car then stops for 4 to 5 hours, the transmission act up again albeit less time to warm.
Any pointers on what's happening and how to fix this?

The car has a four speed tranmission, not the one with overdrive. My mechanic says it is related to this and recommends a transmission overhaul.
