auto trans cooler bypassed? 200 1987

I bought an auto trans filter from IPD. Figured I'd do a tranny flush and add the inline filter. Took a closer look and noticed that the transmission lines are disconnected at the radiator and just looped to each other with a piece of rubber hose. Any thoughts on this? I've guessed that the trans cooler may have sprung a leak at some point and just been bypassed as a cheap fix. Any other ideas why someone would do this? Was it ever recommended by anyone?
