Malfunctioning Turn Signal Indicator Light 140-160 1971

This is a piddling, totally non-critical but, nevertheless, annoying electrical glitch. All turn signal lights work perfectly in the turn signal and emergency flasher mode, but the green indicator light in the instrument cluster only works when the right turn signal or the emergency flasher is activated. With the left turn signal activated, the indicator light sometimes flashes once weakly, or not at all, and the flasher unit clicks very faintly. I assumed a bad contact , so I chased down all the wires and cleaned the contacts right down to the light bulbs in the left front turn signals. I also swapped out the flasher unit. All to no avail. Anyone have a notion as to what might be going on?
