tachometer weirdness 900

Recently I've noticed my Tach having odd behavior on idle. After the car has warmed up and I'm at a stop light idling, sometimes the needle will drop down to zero. However, the engine feels like it's idling fine, at the same pitch and vibration as usual. Very rarely, the needle will jump rapidly around in about a 1500 RPM range from the actual value. Is this an early warning of my RPM sensor going bad? Or is it in the dash? Thanks in advace guys for any comments.
