The distributor is pretty easy to remove:
it's just bolted to the back of the head with 2 10mm (M6) bolts. There are also 2 8mm (M5?) bolts for holding the cap on, which you won't need to remove.
It's got a big o-ring around the body and that's all that really holds it in. They are prone to shaft seal leakage, particularly if the flame trap is plugged up. Repairs to the shaft seals are 50-50 for success.
What leads you to believe the dist is bad?
Have the knocks gone away with the replacement of the oil pump? Certainly any engine will suffer damage with low oil pressure... did the oil light come on at idle before?
As for valvetrain, these engines require very little service but could need an adjustment once in a great while. This requires re-shimming the valves to get correct clearances. The job requires removing the timing belt as well as the valve cover. The shims are available as a kit; IPD rents them if needed. www.ipdusa.com
Good luck!
