Headlamp rewire upgrade

I have H3 hi beams and H4 low beam rectangular headlamps in my Volvo but want to power these via relays and heavier 12 or even 10 ga. wire. My question is how do you solder the wire to the existing plug ends in the plastic carrier or is it best to do away with the plastic and just solder to new ends and clip them onto the light poles separately? I hope this is the right terminology that someone can understand. I looked in the archives but didn't find anything.
