740 wagon broken tailgate strut mounting 700

My wagon has gone through 2 sets of struts in its long life, didn't realize I should have replaced the mounting screws. One of the screws broke off leaving about 3/8's of an inch still inside the hole. If you believe my son who drives the car, "it just happened one day by itself". Seems more to me someone forced the tailgate down and snapped the mounting screw. It was suggested by a mechanic at the dealership that we back it out with a left hand drill bit, tried and it isn't working, maybe there is a better type or size, we don't know. Does anyone have any ideas? We sprayed liquid silicone on it, seems like it may have moved a tad, but it doesn't want to come out. THANKS FOR ANY HELP!
