Alarms?

A friend of mine recently had his old saab stolen. I never was too concearned about theft untill noticing that there has been a lot of car theft lately. Since some people have no reguar for others, I seriosly considering an alarm. the only thing that I'm not shure about with an alarm is what kind of damage they do to the alternator. I know someone with a camry that has an alarm on it, and it gone through several alternators in not very many miles. Is this an issue on a Volvo? I never thought someone would still a Volvo, but if they are stilling very uppopular cars like saabs, I have just become a little concearned.
