Oh, poop... rear spring top mounting area rusting out 700 1987

Car is up in the rear for driveline work, so I'm poking around. Driver's side rear has been a hair low, and I thought I had a spring going bad... I wish...
The area at the top spring mounting is letting go, spring is bent like a banana, although everything is still attached the mount area is ripping up from the inboard side. Damage appears to be confined to the area above the spring retainer. Surprised me quite a bit as the car is elsewhere cancer-free.
Anyone had this? Any recommendations as to what guage of metal to use for repair? What needs to be disconnected electrically besides the battery and maybe the alternator ground before welding a brick?
Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks
