230f still running like crap....IDEAS?

I am in the process of swapping my 230f into a 79 242gt and would like to get the 230 running strong before i drop it in. Last year the timing belt broke and I installed a new one. The car ran ok but was a little rough ever since. well yesterday i got tired of the rough idle (it also won't rpm to great..kind of missing) so I tried one tooth back and one tooth ahead on the cam...both resulted in even worse performance. I was hoping to stay away from pulling the head to check the valves, can anyone offer some advice before I go to the additional expense and time of a head gasket and or valve job? HELP!
Thanks in Advance!

p.s. All the pumps and filters are relatively new.
