The auxiliary cooling fan in front of the radiator does not automatically come on when I turn on the AC in my car ('91 740). The fan is activated by the thermoswitch in the top of my radiator.

If you let the engine idle on a hot day, the fan should cycle on and off, whether you have the AC on or off--if it does not, my guess is that your thermoswitch has worn out. Could also be the relay, but I would check the thermoswitch first.
