Heater control Valve problems 700

Greetings!

My heater control valve has just cracked at the smaller connecting end (darn plastic). I had to go to AutoZone just to pick up some sort of connecting piece (ford pcv valve elbow connection). Everything was closed and or did not have the emergency hose kit! Anyways how long can i use this rigged by-pass (will it effect engine/cooling functionality)? I will order 2 new valves from fcpgroton.com tommorow. What else might one look for regarding the cooling systems on these incredible vehicles (mechanically inclined). 88 740 gle wagon non-turbo 8 valve (excellent condition/premium products/strict maintenance-no abuse), oh and 417,657 miles!!!!

Best Regards
