I called up a local tire dealer and asked them to recommend tires for an '86 240 wgn - I told him I have had snows on for the past 3 years and like the grip but I wanted to know about summer tires, like touring, etc. They basically said, being an '86 it might not be worth a separate set of 3-season tires that wouldn't really deliver enhanced performance/comfort on a car that is worn out in enough other places, like suspension, front end etc. I actually liked how he put it: all the performance is used up (as if it were like carbonation - dissipates and not coming back) and now you just want to drive it and stay on the road.
I have read a bunch of the archives and noted that people seem to like the Dunlop sports or the Mich x-1s or Yoko Avids but probably some of those posts were 940 or 740 forums. In a nutshell it is worth it to go for those tires for just any volvo that may or may not have suspension upgrades, etc? I guess I would get touring tires or basic non-snow if even an old car could be made noticably quieter and more comfortable. At this point re-newing with snow tires seems the most practical option. The only thing really improved on it since I got it are IPd sway bars, new rack, tie rods ends - otherwise it feels like 240,000 probably should.
