Battery light on... 200 1989

My battery light is on and has only turned off when I was on the Autobahn doing about 95 MPH. However, when I slowed down my light came back on and seems to stay on. Its lights up weekly at first but when I step on the gas it gets alot brighter. I took it to get tested and the shop said my altenator is putting out too much voltage. Would a bad Voltage regulator cause this problem? I bought a new one off the internet just in case. I haven't recieved it yet. Its from an 89 Volvo 740 hopefully it fits. Any help or advice appreciated.
