a/c vacuum pump noisy 700 1987

on my 87 760T the vacuum pump for the climate control runs often and noisily. i duct-taped a lawnmower muffler on the end of the rubber air exhaust hose and that helped a little but the pump itself is really noisy. my next idea is to take a tupperware-type plastic box and fill it with expanding foam but i'm afraid that might overheat the pump motor. perhaps some vent holes in the box? anybody else try to fix this? it's pretty annoying noise while idling at stoplights. i'm reluctant to replace all the vacuum hose because the climate control is working fine and it seems daunting to go into the dash for this minor problem. any help appreciated. thanks
