A melted piston will have lots of blow by, and there will be lots of vapor spewing out of the oil fill opening (with the oil fill cap off, of course)when the engine is running. A melted piston looks like this from above,


When the piston is remove, it looks like this,


A used engine is far cheaper than repairing the damaged one.
