So, if I put the connection back from the oil cap to the intake manifold do you think the problem is solved?

No, not with the dump tube in place. Then you have a large air leak into the intake manifold: tube -> crankcase -> cap -> manifold.

Whichever way you hook it up, you need a restriction in the flow path. That can be a PCV valve (the B18 way) or a metered orifice (the B20 way) -- which is fitting with a small hole in it attached to the manifold, not an open fitting.

There's very little advantage from one system to the other. I'd do whichever is easiest.

B18 flow:
Air cleaner -> oil cap -> crankcase -> teardrop with wire mesh -> (with PCV valve -> open fitting in intake manifold.

B20 flow:
Air cleaner -> teardrop (no mesh needed) -> crankcase -> oil cap with mesh -> metered fitting on intake manifold.
