I apologise for labouring this thread but I have (yet) another question...
I followed the instructions - set the points and timing as instructed and the car started first time - thanks!
To make things more messy I fitted the twin SUs because my Stromberg was seeping petrol probably because of all my attempts to start the car. I've adjusted them as best I can (I know that its not ideal if the timing is off) but I wanted to get things as near right as possible. Its running rich judging by the exhaust smell but I've adjusted the jets until the idle drops and I'm happy with the throttle and linkage adjustments etc.
The main problem is that the idle is lumpy so its not there yet. What I'm not sure of is this:- the scribe mark on the side of the distributor is slightly ahead of the cam peak so the points are fully open before the rotor points to it. But when setting the timing, the spark occurs before the cam peak and therefore before the rotor hits the contact. Is this the way that it should be?
The points gap is correct and adjusting the timing between 15 and 25 degrees BTDC doesn't really sort the lumpy idle. The car drives fine but doesn't ping under load and seems to lack torque.
I suspect that some of the above is related to the carbs but I'm still suspicious of the timing. Again, I appreciate any help - I've learned a lot and have a car that runs which is way ahead of where I was yesterday - thanks again.
