Vac advance?? 140-160

I've been told, but is yet to confirm, that vacuum retard was actually only used for the US market. Apparently the rest of the world got vacuum advance. But I'm still to confirm this. Will have a look on my car (assembled in South Africa) now that I know what to look for, and post a reply.

At work a mechanical engineer, who knows a lot about transmissions, told me that vacuum retard was also used to smooth out the power curve for automatics. Perhaps it was done for smog control, but I also trust this answer. So perhaps it was done for both?

Have fun...
