gear shift knob interchangability? 200 1980

I have a 1980 245 wagon with manual transmission. This car is in fantastic shape and is my daily driver. It has finally come to the point where I can’t take the rattle from the gearshift knob any longer. The plastic piece, which holds the stock sliding OD switch, rattles too much and I am not willing to replace it should she break again. So, hoping to fix the problem for good, I went to the junkyard today and picked up 2 manual gear shift knobs that are solid rubber with press down OD buttons like what is commonly found on turbo models. However once I installed one, the OD button would only stay on if I held it in place. Thinking I had a bad switch, I installed the second one...same deal, no constant Overdrive, it would disengage if I released with my finger. I looked in my Volvo stock and found a third switch and it did the same thing...only stayed in overdrive if I held it down. Did I get three bad buttons or is my M46 not capable of using this type of knob? I am sure the answer is something stupid or I am just overlooking something simple. Any thoughts.

thanks
ryan
