740 sedan boot keeps locking 700 1989

My folks have a 740GL sedan with an odd problem.
The boot lid (trunk for those in the US) keeps locking. Basically, you can unlock the boot either by the central locking or with the key directly. But you can only open the lid by pushing the button maybe two times and then the next time you go to open it, it locks as the button is pushed. It feels as though something is slipping/sliding as the button is pushed and locks the boot lid. It then has to be unlocked again.
What could be causing this? Is the locking rod (or whatever) worn?

Thanks for any thoughts

Brad
