Went car shoping whith parents this weekend...saw some interesting cars/ attitudes

So mom want's a sl mercedes. I thought I would go out and look at a coulpe of them for the heck of it with them. Saturday went to one specility car lot that had several 1970's SL's. They had one that had 75K and rust everywhere, yet accourding to the dealor was a show room quality car!? They had another one that seemed pretty decent, but it looked like it had been wreaked and pieced back to togeather. No thanks. They brought by a 380 Sl that seemed pretty nice considering the other's that we have looked at thus far. However guess the car has some type of deal with the timing chain that makes it so it has to be changed every 40K. If that's the only problem that does not sound to bad, but we will have to investigate further. I told them what ever car they want to buy, they NEED to have it looked over by a mecahic. Would they be better off with a MB dealer, or a private shop, which we have yet to meet yet? know that these are not the most reliable cars, but that is what they want, so that's okay. I think they are great looking cars but not shure if I would want to be responcible for the care and feeding of it? The 380 had a almost perfect original soft top and original paint. Are California cars more of a headach they they are worth, because of emmission requirements?
